How to Create a Blank Canvas on Adobe CS5

By C. Taylor

Adobe Photoshop works powerfully with pictures and graphics, which you can open up within the program. However, it works equally well when generating graphics from scratch. To create your own images, you start with a blank canvas where you can add your own elements. When creating this empty canvas, you can choose various options, such as size, resolution, background and color mode to restrict the canvas to the parameters you dictate.

Step 1

Open Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Step 2

Click "File" and "New." Alternatively, hold the "Ctrl" key and press "N."

Step 3

Enter the name for your canvas in the "Name" field. This serves as your default save name.

Step 4

Click the drop-down menu next to "Preset" and click the appropriate starting point, such as "Default Photoshop Size," "Photo" or "Web."

Step 5

Enter the specific details for your requirements. You can manually enter values for canvas "Width," "Height" and "Resolution," or click a new "Color Mode" or "Background Contents" from their respective drop-down menus. You can also choose your preferred units, such as inches or pixels for size measurements.

Step 6

Click "OK" to create your blank canvas.
