How to Create an Additional Email Address

By Heather Topham Wood

There may be several reasons why you wish to create an additional email address under a single account. You may want separate addresses to give out to professional colleagues and friends. Each email provider will have slightly different steps to do this, but each will follow general guidelines. The following uses Yahoo Mail as an example on how to create an additional email address.

Step 1

Open your Yahoo Mail. At the top of the page, you will find a menu option for "Email Control Panel." Click on the link in order to get to the mail options page.

Step 2

Choose "Add Alias" under the menu options on the "Email Control Panel." If you already have more than one user on the account, you'll have to select the check mark next to your name in order to continue.

Step 3

Decide on the name of your additional email address. Your mail server will likely offer suggestions, but you can choose any name that isn't already being used. Once you select the name, type it into the pop up box and click "Next." Additionally, Yahoo allows you to create multiple email addresses at once by selecting "Create More."

Step 4

Select your default email address under the "Email Control Panel." However, before you send mail, you will be able to select the email alias that you wish to appear on the user's screen by clicking on the "From" button within the body of the email. Recipients will be able to send you mail to any of your different email addresses, and it will still appear within your inbox.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want different inboxes for each email address that you create, you will have to choose to open an "Additional User" account through your mail server.
