While Windows passwords typically are not saved in the user registry, the one notable exception to the general rule is when the user has set up the computer for automatic logons. This retains the user's password file embedded within the system registry, allowing it to be retrieved in the event it is forgotten. This process typically takes fewer than 10 minutes.
