How to Get Sound From Laptop to TV

By Clifton Watson

A computer full of music is great, but it would be even better to be able to play that music on your home stereo system. Connecting a laptop to a TV is a great way to experience this kind of a boost to a laptop's audio. If both your laptop and your TV have an HDMI port, this can be accomplished with ease. Even if it doesn't have an HDMI port, there is still a simple way to get your computer's media to play through your TV.

Things You'll Need

  • HDMI cable
  • 3.5mm audio auxiliary cable
  • 3.5mm RCA male cable

Using An HDMI Cable

Step 1

Plug one end of the HDMI cable into your computer. It doesn't matter which end.

Step 2

Plug the other end of the cable into your TV.

Step 3

Select the corresponding HDMI input on your TV to have audio and video from your computer appear on your TV.

Using RCA Cables

Step 1

Plug one end of the 3.5mm auxiliary cable into the headphone jack on your laptop.

Step 2

Plug the other end of the cable into the 3.5mm end of your 3.5mm RCA cable.

Step 3

Plug the red and white male plugs of your 3.5mm RCA cable into the audio inputs on your TV.

Step 4

Select the corresponding input on your TV to listen to your laptop through your TV's audio system.

Tips & Warnings

  • The 3.5mm auxiliary and RCA cables can be obtained cheaply at your local specialty electronics store like Radio Shack.
  • Don't buy expensive, brand-name HDMI cables from big-box stores. HDMI cables can be obtained from online retailers like Amazon.com for very little money and work just as well as the kind that cost close to $100 at other stores.
