How to Import Visio Into SketchUp

By Daniel Ketchum

Google Sketch is a 3D modeling application. SketchUp is usually used to create 3D realizations of houses and other buildings, though it can be used for other purposes, such as creating 3D charts or diagrams. Visio is a Microsoft product that can be used to create diagrams, so you might want to be able to import these files to SketchUp for use there. However, you cannot directly import Visio files into SketchUp. There is a way around this.

Step 1

Start the Visio application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog, open a file you want to export.

Step 2

Select "File" from the menu and choose "Save As." In the dialog that appears, change the file type to ".dwg" and click "Save."

Step 3

Start the SketchUp application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Import." In the dialog, browse to and open the file you saved in Step 2.
