How to Install an Ethernet Switch

By Garrett Genet

An Ethernet switch can expand your home network while making it easier to organize. Instead of running a cable to the router from each computer or console, you can run one cable from the router to each switch. Each switch can have multiple devices connected to it, making it simple to organize. Switches typically require no configuration; all you have to do is plug them into your network and they'll work.

Things You'll Need

  • Ethernet cables

Step 1

Unplug all devices connected to your router and plug them into the switch.

Step 2

Leave one port free on the switch so you can run an Ethernet cable to the router.

Step 3

Power on the switch by plugging in the AC adapter. The switch should integrate itself into your network in less than a minute.
