How to Make a Partition on My Passport WD

By Greyson Ferguson

When you purchase the external My Passport WD hard drive, the storage unit comes as one drive. This means all information is stored on the drive and any connected computer sees it as one drive. However, by adding a partition, you are splitting the drive into two different sections. This helps separate information on the drive, and if one area of the drive becomes corrupt, it does not affect the opposite partition.

Things You'll Need

  • USB data cable

Step 1

Plug the provided USB data cable into the USB port on the side of the My Passport WD, then insert the opposite end of the cable into a USB port on your computer system.

Step 2

Power on the hard drive, then close the AutoPlay window that loads onto the screen.

Step 3

Right-click "Computer," then choose "Manage."

Step 4

Click "Disk Manager" and a new application window will open.

Step 5

Click the My Passport WD from the list of disks, then right-click the drive and choose "New Partition. Choose the letter you want to represent the new partition, then set the format option to NTFS. Click "OK" and the new partition will be created on your drive.
