How to Make Felt in Photoshop

By Daniel Ketchum

One of the most frequently performed tasks when working in Adobe Photoshop is the creation of textures. These textures might be used as backgrounds for Web pages or desktops, or as a texture for a 3-D model. If you need to create a felt texture, you will find this is easy to do using the tools and functions of Photoshop.

Step 1

Start Photoshop. Click “File" from the menu and click “New.” Enter the height and width you want for the texture and click “OK.”

Step 2

Select the “Paintbucket” from the toolbar and use it to fill the canvas with a light brown color.

Step 3

Select “Filter” from the menu and click “Noise.” From the options, choose “Add Noise.” In the dialog, click “Uniform” and set the “Amount” to 20. Click “OK.”

Step 4

Select “Filter” from the menu and click “Blur.” From the options, choose “Motion Blur.” In the dialog, set the “Angle” to 50 and “Distance” to 5. Click “OK.”

Step 5

Select “Filter” from the menu and click “Liquefy.” In the dialog, use the “Forward Warp” and “Spiral” tools to make the texture less uniform. Click “OK” and save your work.
