How to Make Pen Ink

By Alicia Bodine

Buying ink today is extremely cheap which is why most people have stopped making their own. There are times, however, when making your own pen ink is useful. Calligraphy is an art form using a pen, ink and fancy lettering. Making your own ink will allow you to create some really cool lettering for wedding invitations, birthday cards, or any type of special occasion.

Things You'll Need

  • Walnut tree
  • Large bucket
  • Large metal pot
  • Hot plate
  • Water
  • Stick
  • Soot
  • 3 Tbs of soot
  • 1 Egg white
  • 2 Tbs of honey
  • Plastic spoon
  • Plastic container
  • Beater
  • Baby food jar with lid

Ink Made from Walnuts

Step 1

Get a large bucket and fill it up with the walnuts from your yard. This is the perfect type of ink for anyone who lives near some walnut trees. Place your bucket somewhere outside where they will stay under the shade. Wait for the walnuts to begin to rot. This should take around one week.

Step 2

Pour your walnuts into a large metal cooking pot. Add water close to the top. Cook the walnuts on top of the hot plate. You are going to have to spend a few days cooking them until the water begins to get brown. You will have to add more water to the pot from time to time. Check the color of the water with a stick. When the water begins to get a darker brown you will need to drain it.

Step 3

Use a strainer to get rid of the leftover walnut chunks and pieces. Place the liquid back in to the pot and cook down.

Step 4

Cook the liquid until it gets to the dark color you are looking for. Remove it from the heat when it is thicker than regular water.

Step 5

Pour the ink into some storage jars and take out as needed.

Ink Made From a Fireplace

Step 1

Crack an egg and separate the white from the yolk. Add the egg white to a plastic container and beat it with a beater.

Step 2

Collect the soot from the fire place and add it to the egg white. Mix it well.

Step 3

Add honey to the soot and egg white mixture and mix well.

Step 4

Pour the ink mixture in to a small baby food jar and screw on the lid. Keep refrigerated until you are ready to use it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy an old fashioned ink pen to use with your new ink. You could get these types of pens at any craft store that sells calligraphy sets.
  • Ink stains, so wear old clothes when you are making it. Otherwise your clothes could get ruined.
  • Be careful when using a hot plate. No child should be allowed anywhere near the hot plate when it is in use. There are too many dangers of getting burned.
