How to Manually Turn off AVG

By Mike Andrews

AVG is a free anti-virus program that protects your computer from viruses as well as other malware. After its initial installation, the program starts automatically when your computer boots up to provide always-on protection for Web surfing, email and on- and off-line applications. AVG can also scan your computer's entire contents, either during a prescheduled scan or during a scan initiated by the user. Unfortunately for AVG users, the program provides no easy way to turn AVG off.

Step 1

Press the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Del" buttons simultaneously to open a list of Windows options, then select "Start Task Manager" to open Windows Task Manager.

Step 2

Click on the "Processes" tab, and then click on "avgtray.exe" to select AVG. Click on the "End Process" button at the bottom of the Windows Task Manager window.

Step 3

Click on the "Services" tab and right-click on "AVGIDSAgent" in the services list, then select "Stop Service" from the pop-up menu. Right-click on "avgwd" and select "Stop Service" to stop the AVG WatchDog.

Step 4

Click on the "X" in the upper-right corner of the Windows Task Manager window to close the application.
