A file with an extension of “.prn” is a print file. The print file includes the content of the document to be printed. In addition, the PRN file contains the commands the printer uses to print the file. If you open the PRN file for viewing, you see what appear to be cryptic characters and garbage, with smatterings of the content being sent to the printer. You can open and view PRN files with a text editor such as Notepad or Wordpad.
Right-click the PRN file. A context menu appears.
Click “Open With.”
Select either “Notepad” (if the file is small) or “WordPad” (if the file is large). The PRN file opens in the text editor program.
