A text file (TXT) is the most basic file format for documents, preserving only alphanumeric characters, spacing, and paragraphs and dispensing with such graphical information as font size, style and color. The advantage of this format is that any application can read such files. Though these procedures apply specifically to Microsoft Word for Windows XP, they work in general for all word processing programs.

Choose the "Open" option from the "File" menu. The "Open" dialog box appears.
Choose "Text Files (*.txt)" from the "Files of Type" dropdown.
Navigate through the folders. (To open a folder, double-click it.) When you find your file, double-click it. The text appears in the document display window.
