How to Open DWG Files on a Mac

DWG is a file format that is used to save engineering, architecture and design drawings both in two and three dimensions. The format is produced by several popular CAD programs. You may have been sent a DWG file that you need to view on your Mac. Fortunately, there are several options for viewing these files.

Microspot, eDrawings

Step 1

Open a browser and go to the Microspot or eDrawings Web page. (See Resources for links.) These sites offer DWG viewers.

Step 2

To use the Microspot or eDrawings software, download and install the software to your Mac.

Step 3

Move your DWG file to an accessible location on your Mac, such as the desktop.

Step 4

Open the software. Click "File" in the main menu bar. Scroll down and select "Open."

Step 5

Find the file that you moved in Step 3. Click the "Open" button. View your DWG file.

SolidWorks

Step 1

Move your DWG file to an accessible location on your Mac such as the desktop.

Step 2

Open a browser and go to the SolidWorks Drawing Now page (see Resources) and click the "Run" button. Drawings Now is an web-based solution that allows you to view DWG files through any browser, even on a Mac.

Step 3

Click the "Login" button. Click the "Register" link. Fill out the fields on the registration page. Click the "I agree" button.

Step 4

Go back to the SolidWorks Drawing Now page. click the "Run" button. Click the "Login" button and enter your email address and password in the appropriate fields. You will be taken back to the main page.

Step 5

Click the "Browse" button at the top of the page. Find and open your DWG file that you moved to your desktop in Step 1. View your DWG file.
