How to Open Microsoft Works With Word

Microsoft Word requires a special conversion application to open Microsoft Works 6.0+ files. Users that previously installed Microsoft Works on the computer running Microsoft Word installed the application by default. Other users must download the free add-in from Microsoft to open Microsoft Works with Word. After installation is complete, Works documents may be opened just like a regular Word document.

Things You'll Need

Step 1

Navigate to the Microsoft Download Center page for the Microsoft Works 6--9 File Converter (see Resources).

Step 2

Click the "Download" button to download and install the program on your computer.

Step 3

Launch Microsoft Word from the "Start" menu or the desktop icon.

Step 4

Click the "Office" icon to open the "File" menu.

Step 5

Select "Open" and change the file type to "All Files" or "Works." Browse to the folder that contains the Works file, select it and click "Open."
