When you want to check the connection between your computer and a host machine or server, such as a website, you can ping that computer. The ping result gives you information based on connectivity and timeout times. In Microsoft Outlook, if you want to test your connection with the server, the connection testing command is not titled "ping." Instead, Outlook integrates the connectivity within a small testing application that produces information on your connection.

Hold "Ctrl" and then right-click the Outlook icon in the system tray.
Click "Test E-Mail AutoConfiguration." Your e-mail details should be automatically entered in the relevant fields.
Click "Test." This now tests your connection to the email server.
