Cable Internet modems are devices that allow you to connect to the Internet using your cable service. They offer fast transfer speeds and can link together with routers for wireless Internet access. If you are having difficulty accessing the Internet, resetting your modem may solve common problems. Resetting your modem reboots it without clearing saved settings. Reset your cable Internet modem quickly and safely.

Step 1

Turn off your computer and disconnect your wireless router if you have one connected to your cable Internet modem.

Step 2

Unplug your cable Internet modem's power cord. Wait about 30 seconds, and then plug the it back in. Check the lights on your modem to see if they are turning on or flashing. Refer to your modem's manual to see which lights should be on or flashing because it varies with different modems.

Step 3

Locate the "Reset" button on your cable modem. The "Reset" button is usually located on the back or bottom depending on the manufacturer.

Step 4

Press and hold the "Reset" button with a paperclip, pen or a sharp object for a few seconds, and then release. Your modem reboots. It may take up to a minute for it to reboot completely.
