How to Reset the Chip in an Epson Printer's Ink Cartridge

By David Clair

Epson manufactures a wide range of inkjet printers. Each model uses ink cartridges that are intended to be used until they are empty and then replaced. Most Epson cartridges can be refilled as a money-saving option. A refilled Epson ink cartridge must be reset using a chip resetter in order to keep using the cartridge. If the chip in the cartridge is not reset, the printer will treat the cartridge as empty and display an error message when attempting to print.

Things You'll Need

  • Epson chip resetter

Step 1

Hold the Epson ink cartridge against the chip resetter.

Step 2

Position the cartridge so the gold leads on the cartridge are touching the metal contacts on the resetter.

Step 3

Remove the cartridge from the resetter after the LED on the resetter stays a steady green color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reposition the cartridge on the resetter if a green LED light does not come on.
