How to Resize Pictures & Images

By BeckW

When you receive an image or take a photograph, it may come to you in a size that is not ideal for your purposes. You may be working with an application or product that requires a fixed size and will accept no deviation, or you may simply wish to scale the image to a larger or smaller position while maintaining the aspect ratio. All versions of Windows 7 allow you to do this using the built-in Microsoft Paint application.

Step 1

Open the Start menu, click "All programs," then "Accessories," then "Paint."

Step 2

Click the blue drop-down menu button at the top left of the screen, then click "Open."

Step 3

Browse to the file on your hard drive that you would like to open, then click "Resize" in the "Image" section of the menu.

Step 4

Select "Maintain aspect ratio" to ensure that the image maintains the same scale that it currently has. If you do not wish to preserve the scale, remove the check from the box.

Step 5

Enter a percentage to reduce or increase the picture size by in the "Horizontal" and/or "Vertical" text boxes and then click "Percentage." If you wish to resize it to a fixed size, enter the exact value in pixels for both "Horizontal" and "Vertical" entries, then click "Pixels."

Step 6

Click "OK" to apply the transformation.

Step 7

Click the blue drop-down menu and then click "Save as."

Step 8

Enter a new file name for your image and click "Save."
