How to Restore a Computer to Factory Settings Without a Disc

By Chad Buleen

Although many computers feature a disc that owners can use to restore the computer to its factory settings, it is not absolutely necessary for a computer owner to have access to a restore disc. Computers that run on the Microsoft Windows operating system include a "System Recovery" function that allows users to restore the computer to factory settings without a disc.

Step 1

Plug the computer into the power adapter if you are restoring a laptop.

Step 2

Close all open programs.

Step 3

Click "Start" and select "All Programs."

Step 4

Click "System Recovery" and select "PC Recovery."

Step 5

Select the "PC Recovery" option when the screen that lists recovery options appears. Click "Next."

Step 6

Wait while your computer restarts. Click "OK" when the "Welcome to PC Recovery" message appears.

Step 7

Select "System Recovery" in the "System Recovery Panel." The system will reformat itself and destroy all data.

Step 8

Restart the computer when prompted.
