How to Restore Winspool.drv

By Greyson Ferguson

The Winspool.drv is a Windows operating system file that is normally found in the C:\windows\system folder. There is usually no need to open this file directly, but it can be accidentally removed. Normally this takes place when upgrading operating systems (e.g., from Windows 98 to Windows XP). When the file is removed, it can create trouble for the user by not allowing it to open other program files. Most likely the file is still on the hard drive, it is just not being detected, but there is a way to fix this.

Things You'll Need

  • Glary Utilities

Step 1

Download Glary Utilities (see Resources below for link). After clicking the "Download Now" button, it will bring up a window, asking if you'd like to save the download to the computer. Click "Save File" and the file will begin to download.

Step 2

Double-click the file once it has completed downloading. A Glary Utilities file icon will appear either on the desktop or in a "Downloads" pop-up window. Click "OK" and then select "Run" when the system asks if you'd like to run the program. The installation wizard will now load. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Step 3

Open "Glary Utilities." Select the "Modules" tab. Then click "Privacy & Security" and then "File Undelete." This will load a new window.

Step 4

Select the "C:" hard drive, and then click the "Windows" folder. This will limit the search for the missing Winspool.drv file to the "Windows" folder and, thus, the scan will not take as long. Click "Scan" and Glary Utilities will scan the folder for all removed files that are still on the computer.

Step 5

Select Winspool.drv when the scan has completed by checking the box next to its name and click "Restore." This will restore the Winspool.drv file back to its original place.
