How to Set Up a Hotmail Account With Outlook

By Collier Jackson

Hotmail is just one of the several free online email providers that can be accessed from any computer with Internet access. But if you prefer to use the email client Microsoft Outlook, you can set up Outlook to download your Hotmail account emails to your Outlook inbox. You can also configure Outlook to allow you to send emails through Hotmail.

Step 1

Click on "File," and click "Add Account" from the "Info" tab in Outlook.

Step 2

Choose the "Manually Configure Server Settings or Additional Server Types" option and click "Next."

Step 3

Select "Internet Email" and click the "Next" button.

Step 4

Type your name as you want it to appear on outbound emails in the Your Name text field.

Step 5

Enter your Hotmail email address in the Email Address text field.

Step 6

Choose the "POP3" option from the "Account Type" drop-down menu.

Step 7

Type "pop3.live.com" in the Incoming Mail Server field.

Step 8

Type "smtp.live.com" in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) field.

Step 9

Enter your Hotmail username in the User Name field.

Step 10

Type your password for your Hotmail account into the Password field.

Step 11

Check the "Remember Password" box if you don't want to type your password in every time that you use Outlook to access your Hotmail email account. Although this is less secure, if your computer is password protected, this additional security measure may be unnecessary.

Step 12

Click on "More Settings" and select the "Outgoing Server" tab.

Step 13

Check the "My Outgoing Server (SMTP) Requires Authentication" box and choose the "Use Same Settings as My Incoming Mail Sever" option.

Step 14

Click on the "Advanced" tab.

Step 15

Type "995" in the Incoming Server (POP3) field and type "25" in the Outgoing Server (SMTP) field.

Step 16

Check the "This Server Requires an Encrypted Connection (SSL)" box.

Step 17

Check "Leave a Copy of Messages on the Server" if you still want to be able to access your email online. If you leave this box unchecked, your online messages are deleted when they are downloaded to your Outlook inbox.

Step 18

Click "OK," and then click the "Next" button to finish the setup procedure. Outlook now automatically checks to make sure your settings are correct.

Step 19

Click "Finish" when Outlook successfully completes the setup check.
