How to Set Up a New Linksys E1000 Router Without the CD

By Jay Darrington

Cisco adopted the Linksys line of routers in 2003. Linksys routers are designed for both business and home users, with such features as power management and address filtering. The E1000 Linksys router provides the ability to connect to a network through either a wired or wireless connection, extending the distance for sharing an Internet connection.

Step 1

Connect the Ethernet cable supplied with the router to the "1" port on your router. Connect the other end to the Ethernet port on your PC.

Step 2

Open your computer's Web browser and visit "" with the browser. Press Enter.

Step 3

Log into the router at the prompt by entering "admin" in the Password field. Leave the username field blank.

Step 4

Enter your ISP's username and password in the site that appears, using their respective fields.

Step 5

Click the option to "Obtain an IP address automatically." You normally do need to enter an IP address, default gateway or subnet mask manually, unless you have requested a static IP from your provider. In that case, click the "Specify an IP address" option and enter the information your ISP gives you into the relevant fields.
