How to Switch Windows Using a Keyboard

By Leonardo R. Grabkowski

Keyboard shortcuts in Microsoft Windows allow you to quickly make changes without using your mouse. One of the shortcuts available for the latest versions of Windows, including XP, Vista and Windows 7, is the ability to switch between open windows with the keyboard. The function works with any standard keyboard--including laptop keyboards.

Step 1

Locate the "Alt" and "Tab" buttons on your keyboard. Most keyboards have two "Alt" buttons; one on either side of the space bar. The "Tab" button is generally located to the left of the "Q" button.

Step 2

Push and hold either "Alt" button. While holding "Alt," tap the "Tab" button. The window-switch interface will appear. Press the "Tab" button repeatedly to switch through the selections.

Step 3

Release both buttons when you land on the window that you want to switch to. The screen will immediately switch to the selected window.
