How to Turn an Animated GIF into an AVI File

By Jack Gorman

So you want to turn an animated GIF into an AVI file. Animated GIF files are similar to old-style cartoons; essentially they are a series of pictures that are put in sequence to look like a movie. AVI files are the standard for computer video files; they are very large and uncompressed, so they get the best possible resolution. AVIs can be used to create DVDs and can be converted to smaller files such as WMVs for uploading to YouTube.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with Windows XP or higher

Step 1

Open Windows Movie Maker from the "All Programs" folder of the "Start" menu. It could also be in the "Accessories" folder.

Step 2

Click on "Import Pictures," and navigate to your animated GIF file. Click on it, and import it into Windows Movie Maker. The file will now appear in the middle of the screen.

Step 3

Click and drag your file down to the first square in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Drop it there.

Step 4

Click on "Save to My Computer." Name the movie, then click "Next."

Step 5

Choose "Other Settings" in the next menu, then select "DV-AVI (NTSC)." Click "Next."

Step 6

Your movie will now convert. When the process is complete, your AVI file will be ready to use.
