How to Turn Off MacBook Keyboard Lights

By Andrew Todd

MacBook Pro notebook computers have a back-lit keyboard, allowing you to easily see the keyboard keys while using your computer in a dark or low-lit room. This feature offers convenience while typing, but if you are watching a video or would like to save battery power, you may wish to dim or even turn off the keyboard back lighting. MacBook Pro computers allow you to adjust the light intensity using two buttons, located directly on the keyboard.

Step 1

Locate the "F5" button, which can be found in the top row of your MacBook's keyboard.

Step 2

Press the "F5" button to lower the lighting level of the keyboard back light. When pressed, the light-level indicator will appear on the screen, displaying the level at which the back light is presently set. Each time the "F5" button is pressed, the back light will drop one level.

Step 3

Press the "F5" button until the back light is off and there are no blocks remaining in the light-level indicator on the screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Press the "F6" button turn the keyboard back lighting back on.
  • On older non-aluminum MacBook Pro computers, use the "F9" button to lower the back lights and the "F10" button to turn them back on. Pressing the "F8" button will disable the back lights altogether.
