How to Uninstall McAfee
McAfee is security software that uses many components to protect a computer system. Because of the number of components installed with McAfee security products, removing the software can be difficult. While a standard uninstall will sometimes completely remove a McAfee program, it is a good idea to do a scan of your computer to ensure all of the applications and files were deleted.
Go to the "Control Panel." To get into the "Control Panel," open the "Start" menu and choose "Control Panel" from the menu.
Click on the program removal feature. On many operating systems, this feature is called "Add or Remove Programs." On some systems, such as Microsoft Vista, select "Uninstall a Program" under the "Programs" heading.
Scroll through the list of programs until you find the McAfee product you want to uninstall, then click on the name of the program. On systems with the "Add or Remove Programs" feature, a box will open with an option to "Change/Remove" the program. Click this button to get to the McAfee Uninstaller. On systems with the "Uninstall a Program" feature, you will be taken directly into the McAfee Uninstaller when you double-click the program name.
Select the components of the McAfee program that you want to uninstall from your computer. When the McAfee Uninstaller comes up, all of the program's components will automatically be checked for removal. If there are any components of the program you do not want to uninstall, uncheck the items. Leave them all checked and click the "Remove" button to uninstall the entire program.
Confirm that you want McAfee removed from your computer. When you click the "Remove" button on the McAfee Uninstaller, a warning message will ask you to confirm that selection. Click "Remove" again and McAfee will uninstall from your system. Progress of the removal will be monitored on the screen. When removal is complete, reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
Scan your computer system to find and delete any McAfee files or applications that may have been left behind during the program uninstall. While McAfee used to make a tool to help with the complete uninstallation of its products, this tool is no longer available. A system scan will accomplish the same function. If you have installed a new antivirus software to your computer, do the scan with that.
Tips & Warnings
- Download a registry cleaner like Registry Mechanic or RegToy, which will accomplish the same thing as a scan. Antivirus software and registry cleaner scans work in roughly the same way.
