How to Unpin Items

By Matt Koble

Windows 7 makes accessing frequently used programs quicker by allowing you to pin programs to the taskbar and Start menu. Pinning a program to one of these menus is like adding a shortcut to your desktop, it provides an additional button for you to launch the software instead of finding it under "Start" and "All Programs," which can take a bit longer. At some point, you may want to remove a program you rarely use anymore from your taskbar or Start menu, freeing up the space to add programs you use more often.

Step 1

Press your PC's power button and wait while Windows 7 starts. If the computer has multiple users, choose your account, type your password and hit "Enter" to log on.

Step 2

Right-click the pinned item on your taskbar that you would like to remove. If the program is pinned to the Start menu, click "Start" and right-click the pinned program.

Step 3

Click "Unpin this program from taskbar" for items on the taskbar. For Start menu items, click "Unpin from Start Menu."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have an Apple computer, OS X's Dock works similarly. Simply hold your mouse button down on the item you'd like to unpin from the Dock and drag it away from the Dock, releasing your mouse button anywhere on your desktop. An animated puff of smoke will confirm the unpinning.
