How to Update Magellan Maestro 3100

By Leonardo R. Grabkowski

The Magellan Maestro 3100 is a handy device, especially for traveling. Because points of interest and maps are constantly changing, it's a good idea to update your Maestro 3100 to make sure the displayed information is correct. Updating the device is not hard, nor does it cost money; however, it is time consuming. Magellan estimates downloading the update takes 5 1/2 hours on a cable connection. Additionally, installing the update takes an additional hour. Unfortunately, the update is only compatible with Windows XP. If you don't have Windows XP, you'll need to use a different computer to install the update.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows XP operating system
  • Magellan USB cable
  • 2 SD memory cards (one blank)
  • Paper clip

Step 1

Charge your Maestro 3100's battery for three to four hours. The system must be fully charged before you download the update.

Step 2

Sign in to your Magellan account. If you don't have an account, register for free at Magellan's support site (see Resources).

Step 3

Click on "Manuals & Software Updates." Select "Magellan Maestro Series" from the right-side drop down menu. Select "3100 North America" from the next menu. Click "Submit," and then click on "Update." Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Click "I Want to Download this Update."

Step 4

Scroll to the bottom of the update page. Click "I Want to Download this Update" again. Click "Save File" when the box appears. Wait patiently for the update to download. The file is 1.2 GB; it should take several hours, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

Step 5

Insert a memory card into your Magellan if you want to save your custom address book. Otherwise, it is erased during the hard reset/update procedure. If you want to save your address book, select "Options" from the menu, and then choose "Backup and Restore>Backup." Remove the memory card when the backup is complete.

Step 6

Insert a blank memory card (must be 16 MB to 2 GB). Push the end of a paper clip into the small hole on the Maestro 3100 marked "Reset."

Step 7

Open the update zip file. Click "Extract" to extract the contents of the zip file. Click on the setup file (.exe) in the new Magellan folder. Attach your Maestro 3100 to your computer using the Magellan USB cable.

Step 8

Click "Next" to begin the update. Keep your eye on the progress bar. When the update is complete, the system will tell you. Remove the memory card and disconnect the device after the update is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not disconnect the Maestro 3100, or remove its memory card, during the update process.
