How to Use Silverlight

By Mitchell White

Silverlight is a program from Microsoft that allows companies to use multimedia on the Internet. It's usable on various different platforms, including Windows. The way you use Silverlight depends on what you want to do with it. An example of an application for the program is watching movies online via Netflix. To use this service, you must first properly download and install the Silverlight program onto your computer's hard drive.

Step 1

Visit a website that has Silverlight available for download |(see Resources).

Step 2

Download Silverlight by clicking on the download link. In Windows, click "Save As" next to begin the download.

Step 3

Install the program once it downloads by opening the installation file. It should be on your desktop or in your downloads folder.

Step 4

Go through the installation process, which may take a few minutes. If the file says it's unable to be downloaded, try looking in the "Add or Remove Programs" part of your Control Panel for Silverlight. If you uninstall it first, you should be able to install it again successfully.

Step 5

Access an Internet website that uses Silverlight. An example is Netflix. If you log on to your Netflix account, you can hit "Play" on a video that has that option and use Silverlight to watch the movie right on your web browser.
