Logitech Mouse Troubleshooting

Logitech provides a wide variety of pointing devices: trackballs, presenters, mice and keyboard/mice combinations. While much of the troubleshooting information is the same, this article will focus on Logitech mice, both corded and non-corded.

Identification of Problem

The first step to solving a problem is to correctly identify it. Is the mouse not working at all, or is it working poorly? You also need to determine exactly which make and model of Logitech mouse you are using and whether it is corded or not. Additionally, you should know which computer system and operating system you are using (e.g., Windows, Mac or other).

Not Working at All

First check that the mouse will work with your computer and operating system. Almost all Logitech mice work in the Windows environment, but not all work in Mac or other environments. Then determine if your computer supports the type of connection. For example, a Bluetooth mouse requires a computer that supports a Bluetooth connection. A corded mouse may or may not support a PS/2 connection. If you have determined that you have the appropriate mouse for your computer system, the next step is to see if it is connected correctly. For example, a USB port is a rectangular port, and the connection should fit so that no metal is showing. If it does not fit properly, turn the connector over and reinsert. You may also want to check the cord and see if there are any breaks in it. If possible, connect the mouse in another USB port on the same computer. If it still does not work there, see if it works in another compatible computer. In the case of a wireless mouse with a receiver, the receiver is plugged into the USB port. Again, make sure it is plugged in correctly with no breaks in the cord. With a laser mouse, if it is connected properly, turn it over and see if there is a light. If there is no light and it is a cordless mouse with batteries, replace the batteries. If you have a cordless mouse with a receiver, press the connect button on the receiver, and the receiver's led lights should start flashing. Then press the connect button on the underside of the mouse, and the flashing should stop briefly and then return to the prior state. Assuming you have a way to use the computer, take the CD that came with the mouse and insert it in your computer. It should automatically run the setup for the mouse. If you have misplaced your CD and you can connect to the Internet, go to the Logitech site and download the latest drives for your specific mouse and computer configuration (see Resources below).

Working Poorly

One of the most common issues with optical and laser mice is that they are sensitive to the surface on which they sit. Glass desks, reflective surfaces or uneven surfaces often cause difficulty. In those situations, either use a mouse pad or put a piece of paper between the mouse and the reflective surface to resolve the problem. Cordless mice often have intermittent problems when the batteries start to go. Change the batteries and see if the problems disappear.
