Why Is Firefox Always on Top?

By Alexander Poirier

When using a computer, some users like to have one program window always appear on top of the other program windows. While this is beneficial to some users, it can be detrimental to others, especially if they do not know why it is happening. If your Firefox Web browser window is always on top, it can be due to one of two things, both of which can be disabled.

Possible Reasons

If your Firefox Web browser window is always the first window that appears, it is due to one of two things: you either have the "Always on top" add-on installed on your Firefox Web browser, or you have a program installed that enables this feature. If you have the "Always on top" add-on installed, the source of problem is in the Web browser itself. If you are using a program, however, the source of the problem lies outside of the Web browser.

Determining the Cause

You cannot address the problem until you know what is causing it. The easiest way to determine whether the add-on or a program is causing the problem is to check if the add-on is installed. Open the Firefox Web browser, click the "Tools" menu and select the "Add-ons" option. Click the "Extensions" option and look for the "Always on top" extension. If the extension is present, you have found the source of your problem. If the extension is not present, you know that the problem is caused by an outside program.

Disabling the Add-On

If you determined that the "Always on top" add-on is to blame, you must disable the add-on to remove the feature. Open the Firefox Web browser, click the "Tools" menu and select the "Add-ons" option. Click the "Extensions" option and locate for the "Always on top" extension. Click the "Disable" button to the right of the "Always on top" extension to disable it and stop Firefox from always being on top.

Disabling a Program

If you determined that an external program is to blame, you must disable the always on top feature in that program. These programs allow you to enable or disable the "Always on top" feature through your right-click context menu. To disable the feature, launch the Firefox Web browser and right-click on the browser window. Click the "Always on top" option in the context menu that appears to deselect the option and disable the feature.
